Is There Such a Thing as a Spray Foam Removal Certificate?

No. There is no official or industry-standard spray foam removal certificate in the UK, and no body issues one. What exists is the removal contractor's own completion paperwork, and separately, an independent written verification report on the state of the roof after removal. The second is what people are usually trying to obtain.

    The plain answer, up front

There is no national scheme, no register and no standard document for spray foam removal. Nothing is stamped, numbered or lodged anywhere.

If you are offered something described as an official removal certificate, ask who issues it and under what scheme. The answer is generally that the company issuing it invented the format themselves.

Why people expect a certificate to exist

Because in housing, almost everything else comes with one. Gas work, electrical work, EPCs, new build warranties — all produce a recognised document.

The demand also comes from other people. A buyer, a solicitor or a surveyor asks for "proof the foam has been removed", and the homeowner reasonably assumes a formal document must be the thing being requested.

What those parties actually want is evidence they can rely on. The word "certificate" is shorthand for that, not a description of a document that exists.

What the removal contractor's paperwork is — and is not

Most removal companies issue something on completion: an invoice, a job sheet, a completion statement, sometimes a guarantee. Keep all of it. It is genuinely useful.

    What it does establish

    • Who did the work and when
    • What the contractor says was carried out
    • The price paid, and the payment trail
    • Any workmanship guarantee they have offered

    What it cannot establish

    • That removal was complete rather than trimmed back
    • The condition of timber now it is exposed
    • Whether ventilation paths were reopened
    • Whether the covering or membrane was damaged in the process

None of that is a slight on removal contractors. It is simply that a party cannot independently confirm its own work, however well that work was done.

What independent post-removal verification consists of

It is an inspection of the roof void after the work, carried out by someone who had no part in the removal and is paid a fixed fee regardless of what is found.

    • Whether foam has genuinely been taken back off timber and roof surfaces, or cut back and left in place at the edges.
    • Residue on rafters, battens and wall plates, and whether the timber surface has been abraded during removal.
    • Timber condition now the structure can be seen — staining, decay, historic wetting.
    • Calibrated moisture readings at accessible timber locations, benchmarked against published PCA thresholds.
    • Whether eaves and ridge ventilation paths have been reopened and are clear.
    • Damage to the covering, battens or membrane exposed or caused by the removal.
    • Photographic record of each of the above.

The weight it carries comes precisely from that separation. The person writing it has no stake in the removal having gone well, gains nothing from finding fault, and did not invoice for the work being assessed.

    What the written record contains

    A written verification report

    • Property address, inspection date and the assessor's details.
    • Scope of the inspection, and its stated limitations.
    • Findings on completeness of removal, area by area.
    • Timber condition observations with photographs referenced against locations.
    • A table of calibrated moisture readings per location.
    • Ventilation observations at eaves and ridge.
    • A plain-English summary separating what was observed from what it means.

The deliverable is that report. It is deliberately not described as a certificate, because calling it one would imply an authority behind it that does not exist.

Jan was extremely helpful. Talked us through the issues with spray foam very clearly and produced a detailed report with recommendations for next steps. He also followed up with an after sales call, and advised that he was there to help with any further advice that we may need. I would highly recommend.

Why are all our reviews on Google?

Simple: Google reviews are the one thing we can't control. We can't edit them, hide them, or choose which ones you see. Every review comes from a verified Google account and is published unedited, in public, where anyone can read it.

We built SprayFoamCheck on independence — no removal arm, no referral fees — so our reviews sit on the one platform where we have no say over what's shown. If a review site let us filter or curate, it wouldn't prove anything.

Still on the fence? Don't take this page's word for it. Read what other homeowners wrote, straight from the source — then decide.
