The earliest UK spray foam approval found is BBA 08/4598 (2008); the earliest found for roofs is BBA 10/4771 (2010)[1][2]. Nobody knows how many homes have it: the often-quoted 250,000 is an upper bound, estimated in 2021 by two industry bodies with no published method[3]. The government says most was installed outside its grant schemes[4].

Concern grew from 2021, when the RPSA and the PCA warned about hidden roof timbers and lending.

Was spray foam installed under government grant schemes?
Some was, but the government says most was not.

The Green Homes Grant ran for about six months; ECO4 is still open until the end of 2026 (as at 20 October 2026).

What to do next
- If your foam was installed under a scheme, find the paperwork and the warranty details: what paperwork you should have.
- Treat the estimated "250,000" figure, and any "most installed under grants" claim, with care; neither is a count.
- Don't rely on a grant to pay for removal; none existed for private homeowners at the latest government answer found.
- For lending questions, start with spray foam and mortgages.

Questions people ask
Was spray foam on the Green Homes Grant approved list?
No. The government says the Green Homes Grant did not specify which types of insulation could be installed, only that TrustMark-registered installers followed the relevant standards[41]. Its measure list named pitched-roof insulation, not spray foam[6]. A minister said in 2022 that spray foam was acceptable under the schemes' installation standards and that installers chose the products[42].
When did the Green Homes Grant end?
Is spray foam a new type of insulation?
Does the estimated 250,000 mean those homes can't get a mortgage?
That is not what the figure means. The 2021 statement estimated that up to 250,000 homes may have spray foam, an upper bound with no published method[3]. It did not count homes refused a mortgage. Lenders' positions vary and change; see spray foam and mortgages.
